Brief Description (including a definition if possible)
O.R.I.D. is a facilitation framework that guides a focused conversation with a group of people in order to reach some point of agreement or clarify differences.

It involves a facilitator asking people four levels of questions, with each level building on previous levels – moving through senses, heart, head and finally action.
O.R.I.D. is based on the theory that people need to be aware of the actual data and deal with their emotional responses to a topic, in order to carry out better analysis and decision-making.

  1. OBJECTIVE [senses]
    What do/did you see? What are the facts or data? What factual statements can you make?
  2. REFLECTIVE [heart]
    How do people feel about the topic? What do they like and dislike? What are their emotional reactions?
  3. INTERPRETIVE [head]
    What were the issues or challenges? What are the implications? Why did something happen?
  4. DECISIONAL [action]

What is their decision or response? How can the learning be used?

  • Planning
  • Analysing
  • Adopting, adapting & scaling up
  • Mainstreaming

How to use
Using the O.R.I.D. method, you can conduct a facilitated discussion and answer the following types of question on a capitalization process:

  • What are the main challenges that the participants are facing with the experience and how can they be overcome?
  • How might the experience be improved?
  • How can the tacit knowledge of a group of people be made explicit?
